By the Grace of God is an upcoming American Drama film directed by François Ozon and written by François Ozon. "By the Grace of God" It is clear that Ozon is not an author. His extensive cinematographic work includes some interesting and personal films and many other products with a strictly commercial vocation. Even so, there is something about that heterogeneity, an effort to explore formats and themes without too many ties or mandates that usually make me find something that intrigues me, seduces me or, at least, catches my attention.
Having made the clarification, it should be said that Grâce à Dieu fits undoubtedly in the films thought more at the box office and the impact that in some type of more personal aesthetic, thematic or formal search. This does not imply that the result is or should be per se better in either case. But the truth is that it is evident that this film is more 8 women, Potiche or A new friend, than Ricky, The refuge or Drops that fall on hot rocks. The theme of the film is topical, it is one of those that can clearly be identified as an "important" one. Based on “real events,” Ozon looks at the case of priest Bernard Preynat, who in 2016 was denounced for sexually abusing dozens of children since the 1970s in France. True to its unclassifiable essence, the exploitation side of the matter is very present, but also its political side. As in The Rati Horror Show, by Enrique Piñeyro, the film sees the light when the case is still open; while the charges for complicity or cover-up that are endorsed by the superiors of the priest accused of abuse are still undecided, in particular the complaint made against Cardinal Philippe Barbarin.
Principal photography commenced on July 25, 2018 in Tennessee, United States and concluded on April 10, 2019. The film is set for release on October 18, 2019.
